AGROECOTUR opens its doors to all individuals and organizations willing to contribute towards the fulfillment of our social mission.
AGROECOTUR is a non-profit organization, established july 2003 by producers, professionals and non governmental organizations that work on rural and environmental issues, striving for a humane and sustainable rural development, with high respect for community and cultural dynamics that enable our country as a tourist destination rich in landscapes and traditions.
We work for a rural development that is socially just and environmentally sustainable.
We favor the small and medium sized family farm unit.
We strive for the permanency of rural traditions through productive systems that are biodiversity friendly.
Today, we have constituted AGROECOTUR´S Tour Operator Travel Agency, with National Registry No. 12.278 and operations at western Colombia.
¿What prompted us to work on tourism?
New approaches towards the development of rural areas and growth of rural tourism and ecotourism worldwide signal tourism as an important opportunity for complementary economic income for the rural family, based on the multi-active potential of the productive unit or farm.
A vision of future that unite us.
We envision a socially just and environmentally sustainable rural development, that allows small and medium sized farmers to remain at their rural areas and communities, with continuity of multiple cultures and traditions among diverse productive systems and practices. We seek a rural development scheme that takes into account the multi-active potential of farms and land; that harvests on the multi-functional properties of rural activities; that reactivates employment in the fields; helps balancing city-farm income relations; and contributes towards biodiversity preservation and the alimentary safety of rural communities and the national community.
AGROECOTUR´S mission.
AGROECOTUR enables the establishment and provision of agritourism and ecotourism services by rural families and communities, aiming at cultural, environmental and economic sustainability, from a conservation – production perspective.
Our social commitment
AGROECOTUR´s main social objective is: “the economic, social, cultural and environmental welfare of those families that choose tourism services as a complementary income that adds up to their agricultural, timber, cattle, crafts and environmental production”.
What types of tourist units we offer?
AGROECOTUR´s main goal is the provision of a National Network of Agritourism and Ecotourism Services with high quality and identity. This network provides visitors with a unique experience of rural life-styles, culture, nature and landscapes, based on local attractions within four types of touristic units:
Agritourist Farm
Private Nature Reserve
Craftsman Country Home
Rural Home
Our founding principles
Our policy is based on nine (9) founding principles: connectivity, complementariety, sustainability, democracy, multi-cultural approach, quality, clarity, preference and cooperation. Let´s take a quick look at two basic principles:
Connectivity principle
Links visitor´s activities with farm production, through foods and crafts produced in the farm, and leisure activities typical of farm life, such as guided visits, helping with farming activities, hiking, horse riding or taking a bath at rivers and lakes.
Tourism services take into account the conservation of nature and restoration of architectural patrimony, preserving the aesthetics and use of traditional materials in the construction and maintenance of farm buildings and homes.
Links tourism with local employment, job creation and commerce.
Complementariety principle.
Agritourism holds a complementary relation with the main productive activity of the rural unit, be that crops, cattle, tree plantations or environmental conservation. Tourism does not replace farming. Through this principle, farming demands more time allocation from family members than time invested in attending visitors.
Ecotourist activities complement the main purpose of the nature reserve. The conservation and/or restoration of natural ecosystems and associated biodiversity sets the limits to tourism growth within the reserve and community.
Agritourist activities complement the community´s production of crops, cattle, trees, crafts and environmental goods and services. Long-term productive, social and cultural welfare within the community is more important than short-term profits that can be made from tourism.
Reasons to work on Sustainable Agritourism and Ecotourism
Sustainability relates to “…the preservation of nature, economic welfare and social solidarity”. Agritourism and ecotourism strives for:
Productive activities within the tourist unit favoring biodiversity conservation and/or restoration, within agricultural systems and watersheds, protecting soils, water and forests.
Cultural practices within the tourist unit that preserves rural traditions, allowing reasonable transformations through adaptative changes within a social and economic context, without disrupting cultural heritage.
Administration of labor relations within the tourist unit that aims at equitable and just participations.
Complementary relations between agriculture and tourism within the tourist unit, such that time allocation to farm activities is greater then time invested in attending tourism. For nature reserves, it means that biodiversity conservation sets clear limits to the growth of tourism within the ecotourist unit.
